I consider the narrow-minded attitude of Caroline Farrugia Street (Hospital Blessing, July 10) to be an insult to the God-fearing Catholic people who constitute the majority of the population of the Maltese islands.
A blessing is by no means a matter of superstition. It might well be that a blessing would not make a great deal of difference - but then it might be quite the opposite.
It is not meant to be "magic". A blessing is a sign of the belief of the people in the power of God. It is not a promise that God will or will not act as He chooses.
It helps to strengthen their faith and belief.
A blessing is a powerful affirmation of faith in God. All sorts of places and people are blessed in the hope that the power of God will be recognised and that people will remember that power whatever they do.
I, therefore, pray for a blessing upon Ms Farrugia Street and hope that she does not see it as something superstitious. God loves you whether or not you accept that fact.
