The prime minister should clarify that there is no VAT on educational goods as he has done on a local TV programme. When Alfred Sant promised to remove VAT on such goods, without hesitation and even nodding his head for several times, Dr Gonzi replied immediately, stating that there is no VAT on education.

If this is the case, then how does one explain two invoices I have been issued with? Not only do both these invoices show VAT, but the items on Invoice 1 are charged at 18 per cent while those on the other at five per cent.

Adding to this, the MicroSoft-Gov-Offer is charged with the same rate as shown, that is 18 per cent. These aren't the only two. To my knowledge, nobody has yet produced an invoice without VAT, affirming the prime minister's statement.

Who am I supposed to believe? Are the letters 'V-A-T' subject to interpretation?
