The Institute for Environmental Studies (IES) is a recently founded independent organisation that is active within areas of environmental education and research.
The institute's activities are mainly aimed at disseminating knowledge on aspects of the environment through short courses that are offered at various levels, ranging from very basic to more advanced and specialised programmes of study.
The IES also carries out research, with special emphasis on the biological sciences and Mediterranean ecosystems.
Various short courses are offered by the IES. Basic courses introduce participants to general aspects of the Mediterranean environment, terrestrial and marine habitats, and flora and fauna of the Maltese Islands.
More advanced courses deal with aspects of marine biology, applied ecology, habitat conservation and management, and environmental legislation.
The IES also offers a number of educational outdoor activities, including eco-tours and field ecology trips.
The IES team is led by marine ecologist, Dr Joseph A. Borg, who is scientific director at the institute. Ms Marika Pace Gauci was recently appointed course co-ordinator.
