Francesca Xuereb completed her eventful week at the World Youth Championships yesterday when finishing eighth in the 400m final in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

The 16-year-old was unable to match her personal best for the distance and could only manage a 55.86 - 0.76 of a second slower than the Maltese record for youths she had established on Wednesday at the same venue.

Xuereb's participation in the final alone is considered a significant feat as she became the first Maltese junior to have ever contested a final at such a prestigious meeting.

Her twin sister Martina was eliminated in the semi-final on Thursday.

The 400m gold medal went to Ukraine's Yuliya Baraley. She won the race in 53.57.
