Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi, following a media report he was under investigation for possible abuse of office, said yesterday he had not been notified and said he was innocent of any wrongdoing.

Prof. Prodi issued the statement after the website of Panorama news weekly said magistrates had added his name to a preliminary list of people being investigated for abuse of office as part of a probe into possible misuse of EU funds.

To be put under investigation in Italy does not necessarily imply any wrongdoing.

"I have just learned from the Panorama website that I have been added to a list of names (of people) under investigation by magistrates (in the southern city of Catanzaro)," he said, adding that he had not been told directly of any inquiry.
