I read with concern the article regarding the proposed removal of the trees from St John's Square in Valletta.

Why are we in this country so ready to resort to the destruction of trees when we need them so badly?

These trees give life and colour to the area. Their shade contrasts so beautifully with the stark sunlight and provides a spot of relief to tired eyes. Without them the square would be lifeless and drab, devoid of all charm.

We are hearing again the old excuse of damage to the buildings. In all cities I have visited I have seen big trees planted quite near to historic buildings. Is it only in Malta that trees damage buildings?

To remove them to save the paving that is about to be laid is rather short-sighted when it is probable that the paving will be dug up or broken up shortly afterwards. No stretch or type of paving should be given preference over these magnificent trees. Anyway, Valletta is full of broken and dangerous pavements even where there are no trees.
