I read the letter Lifesavers (July 2) by Mike Kettle from Crewe, UK with great interest.

I too found myself in great difficulties some four weeks ago at Golden Bay beach. In fact I was on the verge of drowning trying to save two little girls who were struggling hard to stay alive.

As I am a good swimmer, I swam out to help them. But all three of us were soon in great trouble as the undercurrent was pulling us further and further outwards. I really thought we were not going to make it, when suddenly two young men came to the aid of the little girls and pulled them onto the beach. I was alright, knowing now we would all be safe. I have heard of many good swimmers having had difficulties on that particular beach as the sea there can be treacherous on a rough day.

That is why I am appealing to the council concerned with Golden Bay to install some type of warning, for example a red flag, and some lifebelts by the beach. As that beach is well known to be dangerous, lifeguards should be in attendance, even if only on a rough day.
