Valletta moved swiftly yesterday to agree a deal for Mosta left-back Bryan Agius who had been on the verge of joining Floriana.

Sources told The Times that Floriana had reached a verbal agreement with Division One club Mosta to sign Agius on loan for one year.

However, Floriana's decision to delay the completion of the transaction by one week in order to have a closer look at Agius in a friendly match, appears to have backfired.

Valletta were not linked with the 24-year-old Agius initially but the breakdown of their contract talks with Renie Forace prompted them to step up efforts to increase their options at left-back.

Their sights turned on Agius who played under Paul Zammit when the City coach was in charge of Mosta. Talks between the two clubs did not take long to yield an agreement whereby Agius will join Valletta on loan for one year with an option of making his move permanent at the end of the season.

Agius was expected to report for his first training session with Valletta yesterday.

Meanwhile, Gilbert Agius will spend another week in Sweden where he is currently on trial with second division side Enkopings. The latter yesterday contacted Valletta asking permission to prolong Agius' stay as talks over a short-term deal for the Valletta skipper continue.
