The Nationalist Party's sectional committee in Marsascala and the party's local councillors deplored the behaviour of the mayor and the council secretary, accusing them of making decisions without any consultation.
They said permits had been issued without the council's approval for a market to be set up along the promenade at the end of the week.
But mayor Mario Calleja said when contacted that according to legal notice 119 of 2002, the secretary was within his legal rights to issue such permits.
Problems were being caused because there were people who preferred that such activity was not held in the town in spite of the hawkers having all the necessary permits, he added.
