The Algerian police and counter narcotic smuggling services in Oran have confiscated over 2,180 kilos of treated kif, a kind of cannabis, smashing a drugs smuggling network involving Italy and Malta, the Algerian newspaper El Khabar reported on Saturday.

El Khabar said the masterminds included two drug barons from Oran and three well-known businessmen in Algiers and Blida and another one in Batna Wilaya. The Essadikia court in Oran remanded the five persons in custody and issued warrants of arrest against five others. The five men were accused of international drug smuggling, networking with criminal circles and fraud.

It is not known whether there are any Maltese among those wanted because no names have been released.
