Jessica Upscale Nail Treatment - all nails can be beautiful

Since hands say so much about women - and men - it is essential for even the modestly exigent to take good care of their nails. Their own nails, that is, without having to resort to hiding them under anything else.

Jessica Cosmetics International Inc. of Los Angeles, California, is renowned for its exclusive Upscale Nail Treatment System, designed on the concept that nails, like hair and skin, differ from person to person. The system is a favourite with a long list of celebrities, including Madonna, Sarah Jessica Parker, Julia Roberts and Hillary Clinton.

"The first lady of nails" is how The New York Times had described Jessica Vartoughian, the founder and CEO of Jessica Cosmetics. Raised in Romania by Armenian parents, she moved to America in 1962 and opened the first 'nails only' salon in 1969.

Providing for superior nail care, Jessica products incorporate a wide range of basecoats and treatments for all types of nails - dry, brittle, damaged and post-acrylic, normal, peeling, weak, easily breakable, ridges and imperfect nails. Even the most damaged, post-acrylic nails can be restored, strengthened and enhanced with the Jessica Upscale Nail Treatment System.

The corrective treatments are used as part of one of the most pampering, soothing manicures ever devised. During a Jessica manicure the client is advised on how to best care for hands and nails.

There is also a wide range of home maintenance must-haves for after care, including nail cream, oil, top coat, high-gloss finisher, remover, hand and body bath, and hand and body moisturising emulsion, plus a constantly upgraded choice of colours in exciting shades.

Recent additions to the Jessica range of nail and hand care include a dazzle top coat, and hand creams with ginseng and collagen.

Jessica has also created an exclusive pedicure - an aromatherapy system of pure botanicals that nourishes mind, body and sole with a collection of products, like herbal foot masque, herbal soak crystals, foot bath additive, hydroxy botanical lotion, aroma foot powder, purifying scrub and moisturising cuticle remover. The luxury products incorporate core ingredients such as fruit acids, rosemary, chamomile, mint, aloe vera, ylang ylang and jojoba.

The Jessica Upscale Nail Treatment System and the range of Jessica products are available at Skin Deep Beauty Clinic, Ta' Xbiex Seafront, Msida, and at selected nail cultivists' salons. For enquiries contact MDR Co Ltd on 2131-9368.

Go Mobile supports Fra Diegu Institute

Go Mobile director Peter Gauci recently presented a donation to Fra Diegu Institute of St Venera. The donation was offered by Go Mobile employees themselves following a joint initiative between the human resources and IT departments whereby old personal computers used by Go Mobile were recycled and offered to Go Mobile employees in exchange for a donation.

"Go Mobile, part of the Go Group, takes its social responsibility seriously. We are proud that the employees have actively taken up the company's ethos.

The good work that is being done by the nuns at Fra Diegu Institute is invaluable and, knowing that financial constraints are constantly on the increase, we felt that this donation will certainly put a smile on these children's faces," Mr Gauci said during the presentation at the Go Mobile headquarters in Marsa.

Fra Diegu Institute houses over 15 boys and girls who find themselves without a family to take care of them.

Run by the nuns and relying solely on private donations, the institute homes boys aged three to eleven and girls aged three to 18.

Dual exhibition on Black Pearl

On June 28, Tourism and Culture Minister Francis Zammit Dimech inaugurated a dual art exhibition by artists Anna Dumicz and Joseph Barbara on the Black Pearl in Ta' Xbiex.

Anna Dumicz hails from Poland and studied painting at the I Ripin Academy of Fine Arts in Sankt Petersburg (1988-1990) and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (1991-1996).

She graduated from the artistic faculty with a diploma in painting by Professor Jan Tarasin, and obtained a diploma in sculpture guided by Professor Gustaw Zemla (1996). Her forte is the nude form, both male and female; while she also excels in portraits.

Joseph Barbara, a surreal artist, studied art at the State School between 1967 and 1972 under Karmenu Mangion (1905-98). He prefers to paint in a surrealistic and prismatic style. He also experiments with plastic water bottles, knowing that they are non-recyclable and a hazard to the environment.

He produces stunning figure sculptures with these bottles.

Among the guests present was Fr Marius Zerafa, ex-director of Museums and Professor of the History of Art, at the Angelicum University in Rome.

Grand social event at Kastell Lanzun

The priory of the Maltese Islands of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem recently hosted a cheese and wine get-together for members and guests in the unique surroundings of Kastell Lanzun, at San Gwann.

This fund-raising activity was enhanced by a learned illustrated talk by Professor the Chevalier Charles Savona-Ventura, hospitaller and historian of the priory. He led his audience through the fascinating historical landmarks of the Order in the Holy Land, since their origins as monks under the rule of St Basil tending to the sick near Jerusalem, and their later growth as a Military and Hospitaller Order - organised by Blessed Gerard and Raymond du Puis - collaborating with other Orders, including St John, in the defence of Christendom, while becoming the leaders in the fight against leprosy.

This was followed by a most enjoyable musical programme directed by Marie Therese Vassallo, also a member of the priory. She led her 10-strong MusiKanti vocal ensemble through a lilting series of evergreen songs and some singalongs to the obvious delight of her audience who often joined in. The party then got under way and was a huge success. This first part of the programme was ably compered by chancellor Chev. Michael Ciavola.

In between the talk and the music, Dr the Chev. Joseph R. Pace, prior of the jurisdiction, called upon Chev. David Zammit, Commander-in-Chief of the Special Rescue Group - St Lazarus Corps, to receive a donation for their project related to the publication of a newly branded First Aid Manual and other needs. Half of the sum was raised with the help of a sponsor sourced by Chev. Paul Banavage, commander of the Gozo Commandery.

Chev. Banavage then presented Chev. David Zammit with the keys of an ambulance on behalf of the Commandery of Gozo, acquired through a sponsorship, for the Special Rescue Group - St Lazarus Corps.

The ambulance carries the symbols of both the SRG and the Order and is named after Chev. Vincent Bugeja, a deceased and much-missed member of the priory.

Among the distinguished guests was a delegation from the Commandery of the Castello, led by Chevalier Geoff Fosberry, deputy commander of the Castello, and his consort Dame Alda. Chev. Fosberry heads the Commandery of the Castello, which is the jurisdiction charged as keeper and guardian of the Kastell Lanzun. This property is the administrative headquarters of the Order of St Lazarus, whose Commander is the Order's Grand Master, resident in Madrid, Don Francisco de Borbon y Escasany, Duke of Seville. While liasing with each other, these two local jurisdictions are autonomous from each other under the one flag of the order.

The proceeds of this activity went towards the cost of a recently completed restoration of 17th century oil painting of Jesus Raising Lazarus from the Dead by an unknown artist, kept at the Basilica of St George, conventual church of the Priory of the Maltese Islands. This painting was formally presented anew to the basilica.

AX Foundation supports Missionary Sisters of Jesus of Nazareth

The AX Foundation recently organised a Sicilian Night at the Poseidon Room of the Suncrest Hotel to raise funds for the installation of rubber matting in the play area of the children's day care centre at Birkirkara which is run by the Missionary Sisters of Jesus of Nazareth.

The function was a huge success starting from the set-up of the dining area, the sumptuous food displayed and the Sicilian wine provided throughout the meal. To compliment all this, live Sicilian music was played during the evening. However, the most important fact is that the required sum of money for this project was raised mainly through the donations of various benefactors as well as the whole-hearted efforts of the Suncrest staff who voluntarily dedicated their services for such a worthy cause.

Fondation De Malte president in Messina

Professor Salvino Busuttil, president of the Fondation de Malte, was a keynote speaker on June 30 at the celebrations held by the University of Messina to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome whose final draft had been approved at a special session in Messina.

Professor Busuttil dwelt on Malta's experience since joining the  EU, emphasising that while the balance of that experience was definitely positive, there were opportunities for Malta which still had to be exploited and that the Maltese had yet to fully realise that they were now European.

Reference was also made to Malta's role as an EU country which was entirely Mediterranean. In that context, Professor Busuttil briefly examined the proposal to set up a Mediterranean Union, underlining that such a union would have to address issues relating to immigration, Turkey and the Middle East. He also pointed out that in an 1985 article he had suggested the creation of such an entity.

Professor Busuttil also chaired the session devoted to the European experience of the old member states.
