Labour MP Joe Sammut said in Parliament (as reported by The Times, July 4) that he is not a racist. For the information of Dr Sammut, the following prejudices, in my view, amount to racism:
To blame irrational fears on the persons you fear, just because the persons you fear are of a particular skin colour, is racist, particularly if you create xenophobia by stating your fears publicly and not providing evidence to show factually that your fears are not irrational.
To allege that your fear is well-founded just because of a few rare violent incidents, would make it irrational not to fear fellow Maltese citizens, out of which several members have been convicted of theft, murder, rape and paedophilia. To criminalise a whole black neighbourhood (which they did not choose themselves) just because of a few violent incidents from one or two individuals, is racist. To sow suspicion that the money possessed by some refugees came through illicit means is racist. Dr Sammut should know that not all refugees are poor economic migrants. Rich people deserve the same protection from political persecution, torture and murder as do poor people.
Finally, to suggest that a separate bus should be introduced to segregate migrants from Maltese people is extremely racist. Or does Dr Sammut wish to take us back to Alabama in 1955?
