Competing on the first day of the 2007 ASA National Swimming Championships at the Tal-Qroqq National Pool yesterday, Paul Herrera broke the 50 metres breaststroke national record when he covered the distance in 31.57 seconds.

His time bettered the previous mark of 31.76 which belonged to John John Tabone since April 2000.

Herrera has thus inserted his name for the first time on the individual list of national record holders. He is currently in the men's teams which hold national records in two relay and two medley events.
