After a few people wondered whether last year's Malta "Jazz" Festival had much to do with jazz in its accepted form, the organisers NnG Promotions have this year decided to expand the title to Jazz and Rock Festival. And that's just what it is... although the jazz element is again very much in recession. It will run for four evenings between July 19 and 22.

On the first night, the evening will be occupied by tribute act Australian Pink Floyd. Not much sign of jazz there, we hear you say. Well there you go. On the second evening local band The Characters open the proceedings, followed by another Maltese group, Tribali. Headlining will be Bob Marley's old band The Wailers. On the third evening, on July 21, the programme kicks off with the talented Gozitan duo Chasing Pandora, followed by UK singers PP Arnold and former Blow Monkeys front man Dr Robert. Topping the bill will be Italian jazz singer Nina Ferro.

And saving the best for last, on the fourth evening Ivan Filletti opens the proceedings. He is followed by the iconic Italian R & B singer Zucchero. Some big names in there to be sure, with Zucchero one of the biggest. So even though the event may not please the jazz purists nobody could say it doesn't promise a hugely entertaining feast of music... of whatever type you care to call it.
