William Shakespeare's comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream is one of the Bard of Avon's best-loved works. It has been performed by the MADC at San Anton Gardens on five previous occasions. But this year there is a twist. Instead of the pastoral surroundings of San Anton, the MADC are staging The Dream in the ruins of the Royal Opera House in Valletta. This year the MADC Shakespeare production is also forming part of the Malta Arts Festival, which is centred in our capital city.

The play is being directed by Chris Gatt, who was also responsible for last year's brilliant and innovative MADC production of The Merry Wives of Windsor. So expect more new and inventive ideas in this brand new venue. For this production Mr Gatt will be assisted by Denise Mulholland, who scored a considerable success of her own with her production of Company for the MADC last March. The cast is a very strong one. The plum role of Bottom will be played by Edward Merceica, which should be worth the price of admission alone. Mr Merceica played Flute/Thisbe in a previous production of the play back in 1986. The two sets of lovers will be played by Nerissa Pace, Matthew Gatt, Faye Paris and Jean Marc Agius Gafà. Pia Zammit will play Titania, while Puck changes sex for this production to be performed by Isabella Attard, who should make an excellent Puck. The cast also contains seasoned thesps such as Coryse Borg, Alan Montanaro, Paula Fleri Soler and Wesley Ellul. We are also promised an "all-singing band of fairies".

A Midsummer Night's Dream opens at the Royal Opera House Ruins on July 25, then continues on July 27, 28 and 29.

Bookings can be posted by e-mail directly from the MADC at bookings@madc.com.
