A man has been cleared of handling 10 stolen cars, including Mercedes and BMWs, after a magistrate ruled that the charges had not been sufficiently proven.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli cleared 38-year-old Louis Camilleri, of San Gwann, of purchasing or handling the stolen cars between 1991 and 1998.

The magistrate ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove the elements of the crime - handling stolen property. In some cases it had not been proven that the items had been stolen and in others it was not proven that Mr Camilleri was aware they were stolen.

Police Inspector Paul Vassallo prosecuted.

Lawyer Joseph Giglio appeared for Mr Camilleri.
