Arnold Cassola, the Maltese Green member of the Italian Parliament, asked Italian Home Affairs Minister Giuliano Amato the reasons behind Italy's failure to participate in Tuesday's public hearing in the European Parliament on the recent tragedies involving illegal immigrants in the Mediterranean.

According to Prof. Cassola, Italy's absence at the discussion on such an important Mediterranean topic was quite unexpected.

Prof. Cassola also asked the minister whether he agreed or not that it was useful for Italy to take part in future debates on the theme of illegal migration considering the continuous human tragedies in the area.

"Moreover, did the Italian government intend entering into talks with Libya on the issue?" he asked.
