Six Nato soldiers were killed in southern Afghanistan yesterday when a roadside bomb hit their vehicle, the deadliest attack on the force this month in the country.

One interpreter was also killed in the attack. British, Canadian and Dutch troops make up the bulk of Nato in the south, part of the main bastion for Taliban guerrillas.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, the deadliest since April when six Canadian soldiers were killed in a similar incident.

Afghanistan is going through its bloodiest phase of violence in the past 17 months, the worst since US-led troops overthrew the Taliban's radical Islamic government in 2001.
