Mickey Mouse
Toys for you!
Walt Disney designed a mouse, that was to become the most popular cartoon character ever, while travelling with his wife Lillian on a train to Los Angeles. He named the mouse Mortimer but Lillian did not like that name and suggested Mickey Mouse. So Mickey Mouse was born.
Mickey's first film was Plane Crazy and although people liked it when it was shown, in a sneak preview in May, 1928, the big movie houses were not interested in the mouse.
Mickey eventually made his debut in Disney's first film with sound, Steamboat Willie, on November 18. Walt Disney himself was the original voice of Mickey Mouse.
In 1935, the League of Nations presented Walt Disney with a special medal, in recognition of the fact that Mickey Mouse was "a symbol of universal good will."
