Carmelo Cachia

Frans H. Said writes:

Obituaries are normally written about personalities and noted individuals, but there are of course those who deserve appreciation and recognition.

A very long-standing friend of mine died on June 26 at the venerable age of 83 and was buried two days later in the Safi cemetery, his village of birth. Since I had known him, some 50 years ago, Carmelo Cachia always lived in Zurrieq, but very near Safi, in the Xarolla area.

A capable carpenter, he used to take great pride in his work. I had first met Carmelo at the Royal Air Force headquarters in Floriana where he was the resident carpenter doing any new or repair job as required. He enjoyed the respect of all; in fact even the Air Officer Commanding always had the highest esteem for him.

Carmelo had three children and is also survived by his wife, Theresa, all of whom he loved and did his utmost to see them progress well in life.

The relationship with Carmelo was not the case of officer and worker; with him it was that of mutual respect, appreciation and friendship. He used to be invited in the best homes while, alternatively, anyone was welcome to visit his family where the hospitality went beyond any expectations.

Carmelo was, and should be, an example for all workers who, through their hard and genuine work, are esteemed by all.

His death preceded a very important event as he had been looking forward to celebrate his Diamond wedding anniversary. He was loved by many of the villagers of Safi and Zurrieq. Both political parties and both band clubs of his residential village missed our dear friend Carmelo.

May his soul rest in peace!
