The Association of Maltese Arms Collectors and Shooters yesterday inaugurated the first ever target shooting event with cartridge firearms with newly introduced firearms as made possible by the Arms Act.
The event culminates 15 years of hard work by the association.
Participating in this first ever target shooting event were the AMACS and affiliate the Malta Rifle and Pistol Shooting Club (MRPSC).
The event was held at the AFM Safi range yesterday morning under the supervision of Major Ian Ruggier and his team of specialist personnel.
The opening shots were fired by AMACS president Stephen Petroni, vice-president Paul Libreri and PRO Vincent Borg, who all shot their 9 mm semi-auto pistols.
The three officials have dedicated years of their time and energy to help usher in the new Arms Act, which now makes it possible for target shooters to participate in a wide spectrum of shooting sports as practised in most EU countries.
A total of 14 association and club officials participated in this first event, intended to prepare them for the weekly events, which will be held regularly at Safi and which will then see the participation of the many licensed members.
Supervision of these shooting events will be entrusted to club officials who will be trained and certified by the AFM.
Mr Petroni said that this first shooting event comes at an opportune moment; through its membership in the FESAC (Foundation for European Societies of Arms Collectors), AMACS has influenced the future of the EU Arms Directive - Wednesday's IMCO Committee vote took on board a number of FESAC recommendations based on the new Maltese law, he said.
