Bicycles that are being modified with a petrol engine have started to appear on our roads. These bicycles are registered and the ADT is also giving them a chassis number.

According to Legal Notices 129/2004, 28/2003 and 128/1994, these qualify as mopeds, which means a vehicle having two or three wheels with a speed and engine not exceeding 45 km/h and 50cc respectively.

The ADT is not complying with these Legal Notices and is illegally allowing people to use these bikes on the road. These Legal Notices stipulate that, apart from the registration, a licence is to be issued, something which the ADT is not doing.

Apart from this, these mopeds should also have a certificate of conformity, which should be issued by the manufacturer and should be presented when the moped is being registered.

These modified bicycles are not safe to be used on the road since their brakes are not manufactured to cope with the powerful 50cc engine and also the carburetor can be easily adjusted without the need of tools and speed reaches over 45 km/h.
