The opening of the St Paul's Bay bypass has been delayed by a few days.

The outgoing chief executive of the Malta transport Authority (ADT), Gianfranco Selvaggi, had told The Times that the road - which has been closed for traffic for several months - would reopen today.

The date was also confirmed by Roads Minister Jesmond Mugliett when he visited the roadworks last Saturday.

However, yesterday the road was closed with workers on site even though it was a public holiday.

Although the road is closed, some drivers decided to go through just the same, to save themselves the long tailbacks to enter St Paul's Bay.

When contacted, a spokesman for the Roads Ministry said the road should be opened next week.

A new sewage system had to be laid, which delayed the works. The contractor was working from early morning until late to finish the work at the earliest, the spokesman said.
