I think Angelo Xuereb's article (June 21) regarding the works done at Tal-Grazzja Chapel in High Street, Sliema, requires some clarification.

While it is true that I never raised the money mentioned myself, I never received any donations directly from Mr Xuereb.

In fact, the Lm7,000 that were spent on works at the chapel were passed on to me by Mepa, through the Environment Initiative Partnership Programme Fund. I was not aware that Mr Xuereb had ever contributed to such works. All I know is that developers are asked to contribute as compensation for the negative impact on the environment.

With regard to the Lm3,000 donation mentioned by Mr Xuereb, I declare that this money was never in my possession. I don't think Mr Xuereb's intention is to create some mystery around this sum of money.

All he has to do is ask the entity concerned as to how it was used or whether it is still in their possession. Mr Xuereb also complained that on May 1, the Prime Minister was "whisked off by Fr Victor Soler to show him the state of the chapel and complained that no one had taken action".

I don't feel Fr Soler needs anyone to defend him, but probably he was only exercising his duty as a citizen by showing the Prime Minister his concern for this very precious heritage site.
