Isn't it about time cameras were introduced at traffic lights to catch all the people who decide that a red light is to be ignored?

On my way to work the other morning I passed through the traffic junction on the San Gwann road under the Regional Road flyover. Although my light showed green it didn't stop several cars crossing my path, obviously ignoring their red light. I continued my drive through to Valletta and pulled up at another red light - to my astonishment a driving instructor's car, which was 10 metres behind me, shot past me and through the red light.

While wardens patrol our streets handing out Lm10 fines for people who park four metres from a corner, admittedly a heinous crime, people are allowed to endanger lives with their total disrespect for the laws of the road. In a country where the average journey must be around the 10 to 15-minute mark, I cannot understand why people are willing to risk serious injury for themselves and other road users, not to mention the cost of car repairs, just to save a minute.

Not only would the installation of traffic light cameras eventually persuade people to drive more safely, it would also benefit the government financially during the learning period.
