Alternattiva Demokratika chairman Harry Vassallo said yesterday that several controversial decisions taken by Mepa, such as the waiving of the environment impact assessment (EIA) requirement on the Fort Cambridge project in Sliema, have completely undermined its credibility.

The expected formal notice to the government by the European Commission confirmed what AD had been saying for the last months: That Brussels is not convinced the government and Mepa are respecting EU laws when a permit is issued without an EIA, he said.

"The government has shed its vestige of public ethics. Whoever is responsible for this state of affairs has got no other option but to tender his resignation," Dr Vassallo said.
