At the MCC, two retrospective art exhibitions were inaugurated.

The first is Felix Manuel Quintanilla's show, a sensational art historical event, running from June 11 to 30. This retrospective exhibition of 102 works of art (the earliest dating back to1972) and 25 books proves quite unique as Quintanilla is showing for the first time his "Aztec" series and his "The Eternal Femininity in the World" series.

Born in Burgos, Spain, in 1924, Quintanilla is the recipient of 29 international literary and pictorial awards. He has lived in London since 1970 where he continued to be the leader of the Essentialist Movement. The movement was created in Barcelona in the 1950s and helped numerous international artists.

His pictorial works are presented in 30 museums worldwide, including Malta, which he visited in the late 70s to present his first essentialist exhibition in this country, was organised by the UK's Tempra Academy.

The MCC is also exhibiting works of Quintanilla as a writer has written some 55 books, dealing with subjects such as philosophy, history, poetry, sciences and art history, as a journalist. The was a correspondent ABC in Madrid and London, for Murcia newspapers, Gaceta del Arte, etc...) and as a publisher his exhibits include the magazines Essentialism and the Mundo Espanol, published 1980 and 1982 respectively in London.

The Essentialist Movement manifesto, published in Spanish, English and French, is among Quintanilla's literary works being exhibited at the MCC.

The exhibits will also be shown at the Malta Biennale in France at the Centre Culturel Christiane Peugeot, 62, Avenue de la Grande Armée, Paris, from July 17 to 31. The Quintanilla show comes hot on the heels of the Italian Galleria Zodiaco show, which ran from May 28 to June 10. The latter show's curators were Enza Prestino and Piero Mancuso, who will be organising the 2007 Malta Art Biennale in Italy from September 2 to12.

The opening last Tuesday "The Psychological Art of Portraiture" a multifaceted presentation of fashion design, icons and sculpture by Maltese artist Sandrine England, a 2007 Malta Biennale award recipient, was a great success.

This second retrospective exhibition is running from June 19 to 30 at the MCC. Sandrina's works will also be shown at the Malta Biennale in Paris from July 17 to 31 and at the Malta Biennale in Italy.

Both Malta Biennale exhibitions at the MCC are open for visiting Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until June 30. In case of enquiries call 7901-0140 or 7903-1842 or e-mail damefrancoise tempra@onvol.net.
