Who runs Bank of Valletta?

I refer to Alfred Sant's article (June 20).

I enclose a copy of a letter I have sent to Dr Sant concerning the contents of his article.

"I refer to your opinion article entitled Preset Agendas which appeared in The Times (of Malta) on June 20. In the article you wrote:

"'Moves are afoot to promote people to the top in leading government structures, such as the army, on election eve. Similar arrangements are being prospected in organisations where the government remains a driving force, such as Bank of Valletta, Maltapost and the MIA."

"I am writing to assure you that all decisions within the Bank of Valletta are taken by the board of directors and/or the senior executive management of the bank, and that all these decisions, including appointments, are taken solely by reference to the needs and exigencies of the bank's business.

"I can also assure you that far from being 'a driving force' in the organisation, my personal experience since being appointed chairman of the board at the Bank of Valletta has been that the government is content to leave the conduct of the bank's affairs entirely in the hands of the board.

"In view of the public nature of your article, I am sending a copy of this letter to the editor of The Times for publication."
