Louise Vella, in her letter of June 5, believes that Malta has "no moral obligation coming down from history" regarding the problem of illegal immigrants. Malta certainly has never colonised other countries but, especially for those who claim to be believers in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, there is a higher obligation which simply cannot be ignored. It is the same obligation that in the parable of the Good Samaritan the latter felt when, on the way to Jericho, he came across the man beaten and left half-dead on the way-side. Seeing in these unfortunate human beings the image of the suffering Christ overrides any other consideration that might come to mind.
The government with its limited resources and the Maritime Squadron of the Armed Forces deserve all our prayers for their efforts in the current difficult situation.
