If you're planning to take your afternoon stroll anywhere special these coming days, make sure you head down south to Marsascala. Half-way through your walk on the promenade, you can hop in to see one of Malta's most sought-after experiences - the Unita 2007 exhibition.

Unita 2007 can be coined as the annual bumper art exhibition with its participants this year being close to 60, keeping abreast with the high participation rate of previous rates! And this does not mean that quality is being reneged in favour of quantity. On the contrary, this year a purposely set-up committee has been vetting all the entries to ensure a high standard of exhibits is placed on show. Unita 2007 is now at its fifth take, successfully luring in record numbers of painters and sculptors, mostly the very best of local talent. Joint participation means all aficionados get to appreciate a contemporary overview, all under one roof. Themes chosen by the artists are many and varied and while all exhibits are up for sale, the selection is an experience of a wide-ranging gamut of artistic interpretations.

This year, the list of participating artists includes names such as Harry Alden, Anton Calleja, Joseph Barbara, Kenneth Zammit Tabona, Lino Borg, Celia Borg Cardona, Patrick Dalli, Jason Lu, Keith Balzan, Mark Sagona, Mark Schembri, Matthew Kassar, Paul Cassar, Giuseppi Theuma, Zell Osborne and Anna Galea.

Unita exhibitions have by now become a staple appointment for art lovers. The exhibition arrives just in time each year, not only to herald the long balmy summer days and evenings, but also to provide a generous and exhaustive overview of what contemporary art in this country is all about - all at one impressive go.

Customarily held at the spacious Centru Sant'Anna u San Gwakkin, the exhibition's aims were originally to raise funds for all the parish's regular activities. From a fund-raising event intended to aid the parish in covering expenses required for the upkeep of its centre and its varied social activities throughout the year, it has slowly transformed itself into an eclectic artistic showcase, proving vividly that the far south of Malta is also thriving with artistic fervour.

• Unita 2007 runs at the Marsascala parish centre until July 1. Visiting hours: Monday to Saturday from 7.30 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Sundays and feast days from 9 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 7.30 to 10 p.m. More information may be obtained by phone on 2163 4543 or 9945 3824.
