Sliema and Sirens are the only teams with maximum points in the Preliminary Round of the Wilkinson Sword League but one of these two title contenders, or possibly both, will relinquish their perfect record this evening as they go head-to-head for the first time in the summer campaign.
Top spot in the fledgling standings is currently occupied by Sirens who have 12 points from their opening six matches, two ahead of Neptunes and Sliema, although the latter have played a game less than their two championship rivals.
Both Sirens and Sliema go into their second tough test of the season in high spirits after victories in their last outings.
The character of the Sirens' players was there for all to see last weekend as Pierre Borg's team overcame the early exclusion of Paul Privitera and Charlie Zammit, two pivotal players, to carve out a 15-11 victory over San Giljan.
For their part, Sliema showed nerves of steel and deadly efficiency in front of goal to draw first blood in what promises to be another chapter of fierce rivalry with Neptunes, winning 10-9.
This evening's match at the National Pool promises to be another intriguing contest as both Sirens and Sliema are determined to remain on the winning trail.
In the other top match of the weekend, Neptunes are favourites to bounce back from their defeat to Sliema when they take on neighbours San Giljan tomorrow.
Neptunes know that anything less than a victory would complicate their task of defending the league crown they won last year whereas San Giljan, who have eight points from five matches, will surely do their utmost to sustain their recent improvement and gain more 'big game' experience.
