A 29-year-old refugee was yesterday charged with sexually assaulting a young Maltese woman.

Magistrate Edwina Grima heard Abdel Jalil Binsalem Binahmed, a Palestinian, plead not guilty to violent indecent assault and to holding the woman against her will on Wednesday in Sliema at about 11 a.m.

Police Inspector Stephen Gatt told the magistrate that the alleged incident took place on a construction site where Mr Binahmed worked. The woman was a security officer on the same site and Mr Binahmed pulled her close to him. He then let her go when he was startled by the foreman.

Mr Binahmed was granted bail on condition he does not leave the Hal Far open centre where he lives and was bound by a Lm500 personal guarantee.

Lawyer Patrick Valentino appeared for the accused.
