Helping the animals
Our pets are precious but other animals need extra care
The Society of Protection and Care of Animals (SPCA) is one organisation that does this. They care for between 100 to 150 animals in their home, feeding, grooming, cleaning, walking and playing with them and there are many ways that you can help them.
You and your family can become members, it's only Lm2 a year for children and this entitles you to newsletters and several issues of a magazine, that's both informative and fun. And, if you cannot keep a pet at home you could sponsor one of the SPCA "pets" for only Lm3 a year.
You can also do yourselves a big favour and visit the SPCA bookshop, next to their headquarters in Floriana. It is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
There you'll find masses of children's storybooks and text books at bargain prices. And you could donate all the books you have read, or grown out of to be sold in the shop. And the funds will go towards the care of so many sweet cats and dogs. Older children may like to help by collecting spare toys, books, DVDs and other items and holding a sale to raise funds. You could also ask your family, friends and children at summer school to collect pet food and funds.
So much of the mail we get at Junior News shows how much you care about animals and we're looking out for the ways you help them. Tell us how you support animal welfare and we'll print your letters.
