The Malta Judo Federation will be functioning from the Cottonera Sports Complex for the time being after being offered alternative housing by the authorities, at least until this summer's European Championships for Cadets which are being staged here.
Last weekend, the federation took the decision to close their 100-year-old premises in Pembroke for safety reasons after parts of the roof caved in, damaging equipment and forcing officials to call off all activities, including national team training and grading events.
Yesterday, Envic Galea, the judo federation president, held urgent talks with Education Minister Louis Galea and high-ranking Kunsill Malti ghall-Isport officials Franco Azzopardi and Joe Cassar.
During the meeting, the minister expressed his solidarity with the judo fraternity and offered the federation temporary housing at the Cottonera Sports Complex where training schedules could be adhered to in preparation for the championships.
Another item on the agenda yesterday was the new MJF facilities in Pembroke. This project has now been at a standstill for the past seven years.
