Cyprus is backing Foreign Minister Michael Frendo's candidature for secretary general of the Commonwealth, the government said yesterday.
Dr Frendo held bilateral talks with his Cypriot counterpart Yiorgos Lillikas when he accompanied President Eddie Fenech Adami on his state visit to Cyprus last week.
The talks centred on the development of trade between the two countries and collaboration within the European Union, the Mediterranean and the Commonwealth.
Foreign Minister Lillikas reiterated Cyprus's support for the Malta initiative of a structured dialogue between the EU and the Arab League.
After leaving Cyprus, Dr Frendo, who is also chairman of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group on the Harare Declaration, flew to Pakistan where he met Foreign Minister Mian Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri. He also met President Pervez Musharraf.
President Musharraf and Dr Frendo discussed the importance of the forces of moderation working together internationally and President Musharraf expressed his view that Malta had a particular role to play in inter-faith dialogue.
