The Faculty of Education of the University of Malta will launch a new issue of its monograph series Trends on July 2 at St James Cavalier in Valletta.

Edited by Raphael Vella, who coordinates the Art programme within the Faculty, the publication is called On Art And Art Education In Malta. It attempts, for the first time, to describe and analyse provisions for art education in Maltese schools and artistic institutions.

A historical introduction by Dr Vella discusses approaches to art and art education that have characterised the local scene since the middle of the 20th century and analyses shortcomings related to facilities and time dedicated to the subject in local curricula.

The book launch will be complemented by an exhibition of children's artworks also at St James Cavalier. This is the last of a series of exhibitions at St James organised by Dr Vella.

The exhibition will be called Every Child Is An Artist and will show work by pupils from Pietà Primary School, Lija Primary School, Lorenzo Gafa Boys Secondary School and Verdala International.

Led by their art teachers, Angelique Attard, Robert Zahra and Sarah Proudler, these children have produced drawings, paintings and sculptures inspired by the work of Pablo Picasso.

The works will then be on view until July 26.
