Sebastian Coe, the chairman of London's 2012 Olympics organising committee, is to stand for the vice-presidency of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) this year.
An IAAF source told Reuters that Coe and two other Olympic gold medallists, Alberto Juantorena and Sergei Bubka, would also stand for the four vice-presidents' positions.
Twice Olympic 1,500 metres champion Coe, Cuba's 1976 Olympic 400 and 800 champion Juantorena and Ukrainian 1988 Olympic pole vault gold medallist Bubka, who still holds the world outdoor and indoor records, are already members of the IAAF council.
"It would be a question of him (Coe) winning the confidence of those electing him that he does have the time," the source said.
Elections will take place at the world governing body's congress before the world championships in Osaka, Japan, this August.
The list of candidates has not yet been officially published.
The source said Senegal's Lamine Diack, who has been the IAAF president since 1999, will be unopposed when he stands for another four-year term.
