At this year's ceremony of Dean's Awards for Excellence in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Rector Professor Juanito Camilleri, presented 12 awards to students placing first, second and third in each of the four years of the B.Sc. (Hons) course, academic year 2005/6.
In congratulating the students on their achievement, the dean, Professor Alfred J. Vella spoke of the importance of increasing the number of graduates in science and technology at University and thanked Agenda Bookshop for sponsoring the event with book tokens for the students.
The Dean's Awards for excellence in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics were held for the first time in 1994/1995. Atanas Atanasov placed first, Alison Muscat placed second and Alan Tua placed third among the first years. Elizabeth Aquilina first, Kistian D'Amato second and Teresa Fiorini third among the second years.
From among third-year students, Julian Evans placed first, Andrè Xuereb placed second and Georgiana Xuereb third. For the fourth years, Mark Anthony Caruana placed first, Massimo Farrugia second and Omar Sebastian Saliba third.
The Faculty of Science comprises seven departments, and research is carried out in several fields. Particular areas of interest include marine biology, environmental chemistry, colloid science, molecular modelling, microwave applications, atmospheric physics, algebraic graph theory and combinatorics, systems analysis and design, multimedia authoring environments and statistical theory of non-stochastic processes.
