Current Malta champion Colin Pace is representing Malta in the third European Union Individual Chess Championship which is being played in Aosta, Italy.
Top seed of the competition is Bulgarian Grandmaster Alexander Delchev (Elo 2600) followed by German Luther Thomas and Serb player Sedlak Nikola. Pace is ranked 46th in a field of over 100 players.
On his return to Malta, Pace will turn his attention to coaching for a short period of time as he will be joining Ray Azzopardi and Duncan Vella to deliver two chess courses for beginners at the Malta Chess Federation premises in Sliema next month.
One of the courses, Introduction to Chess for Kids, is aimed for beginners under the age of 12. It is intended for those who have no knowledge of the game. Participants will play and complete a game of chess. They will be shown how to make use of the standard clock.
'Chess for Beginners' is targeted for those who already know the basic rules of the game and would like to learn more on other useful techniques.
Those wishing to attend one of the courses are urged to send the application form (www.chessmalta.com/courseApplicationForm.doc) by post to Chess Courses, Malta Chess Federation, 87, St Vincent Street, Sliema SLM 1445.
