On Sunday, May 27, a full Mellieha parish church witnessed a superb piece of art put up by La Vittoria Band Club as part of its centenary celebrations.
Gozo Bishop Emeritus Nikol Cauchi set the ball rolling with an exquisite, carefully elicited vocabulary used in the lyrics of all musical pieces dedicated to the crowning of Our Lady. Mro Joseph Vella also deserves praise for his compositions and his choice of integrating leading soprano Marita Bezzina, outstanding tenor Joseph Aquilina and excellent baritone Alfred Camilleri in the act.
Credit is also due to the Sine Macula choir of Safi, led by Tony Pace. Their participation, with that of the La Vittoria Band, added spice to a memorable evening.
The standing ovation clearly expressed appreciation of the two-hour performance, well narrated by veteran master of ceremonies George Peresso.
Hats off to the organisers, led by Paulino Mifsud, chairman of the Centenary Celebrations Committee, as well as the president and committee of the La Vittoria Band Club.
