The Gruffalo, a children's book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler was originally published in 1999, sold over 3.5 million copies, won several awards for children's literature, and was eventually turned into a West End and Broadway play.
A Comenius project linking Ave Maria Primary School in Xghajra with the Shanklin Primary School, in the UK, and a primary school of Wewelsfleth, Germany, has resulted in the production of a play based on the The Gruffalo's popular title character.
The play incorporates a lot of background from the three countries to integrate aspects of local folklore and the natural environment.
During a visit to Wewelsfleth, earlier this year, the Xghajra primary school's head Gemma Galea Scannura, and drama teacher Deo Grech finalised the play's script.
The play has since been translated into Maltese and recorded on DVD to be broadcast on Education 22 TV channel.
The Xghajra school has been using the school council and cultural programmes on Radio Kottoner, a community radio, to spread information about this trans-national activity.
The EUPU Socrates national agency is funding the activity as part of the Comenius school project.
