Dynamic dinosaurs!

Dinosaurs appeared in our first issue of Junior News and 10 years later they are as popular as ever. Here are some fun facts about them.

There were over 800 different kinds of dinosaurs. And other reptiles lived in the world long before dinosaurs!

Dinosaurs had large heads but very small brains. The rest of the space was filled with muscle and bone.

Dinosaurs that used their tails to attack their enemies had four feet and ate plants. Those that needed their tails to balance had two feet and two tiny arms and they often ate meat.

Over millions of years, their teeth, jaws and stomachs adapted so they could enjoy even prickly plants and food covered in tough scales!

We cannot really know what colour dinosaurs were but it is most likely that they were a greenish-brown, which would blend with their background.

And which ones are alive today? Well, crocodiles and alligators were around at the time of the dinosaurs.

And their appearance has hardly changed at all. And, on the islands off New Zealand, lives a spiny creature, called a tuatara, which is like a lizard and belongs to a family of lizards that lived alongs.
