Desmond Zammit Marmarà, in his recent article on Alfred Sant, contended that Lawrence Gonzi is only a politician whereas Dr Sant is a "statesman".

Since the article writer referred to the development of the 1996/1998 internal crisis within the Malta Labour Party, which turning point (according to him) led to the September 5, 1998 electoral defeat for the MLP, one may remind readers that during a June 9, 1998 conference/mass meeting held at Vittoriosa, Dr Sant repeatedly insulted Dom Mintoff by calling him a "traitor" and that he, subsequently, feebly tried to deny this.

One wonders whether, according to Mr Zammit Marmarà, these are Dr Sant's statesmanlike qualities that Malta needs.
