As is well known at present the Catholic Church requires a miracle for the beatification of a person and another one for his canonisation. But our belief in the canonisation of someone is not based on the miracle itself but on the infallible proclamation of the Church about the holiness and eternal beatification in heaven of that person.
So those who are perplexed about any possibility that in the future there may be a scientific solution for a miraculously declared healing would be missing the point for the simple reason that the Church can do away with miracles and declare a person as being in heaven by its infallibility.
Besides, even if there is a scientific explanation in the future for a particular healing, the fact remains that at the time when the healing miraculously come about there was no scientific explanation.
Still, a miracle, by its very nature and definition, requires instantaneity, that is, it has to happen suddenly, not little by little. The Vatican houses records of numerous cases of miraculous healings. In each case one can see a number of photos depicting a particular disease going from bad to worse and suddenly a photo that shows complete healing.
All scientists well know, and for that matter we know as well, that even in cases where we have an explanation for a particular healing, that healing does not occur suddenly but gradually. No future scientific discovery will ever prove a sudden healing because a sudden healing is something against nature itself. So today's miracle will remain tomorrow's miracle.
Finally, I would like to add that it is not possible to believe in miracles unless you believe in God who, after all, is the author of all miracles. He is the Creator, Lord and Master of the whole universe and knows best when to perform a miracle.
