Operators and staff of local fish farms attended half-day seminars on aspects of aquaculture and the marine environment, organised by the Institute for Environmental Studies (IES).
The main aim of these seminars was to emphasise the importance of appropriate practices in aquaculture to minimise adverse environmental impacts.
The seminars included lectures and discussions on basic aspects of marine life and habitats, aquaculture practices, environmental impacts of fish farming and monitoring of aquaculture activities.
Enhanced communication and discussions between fish farm operators and experts undertaking the monitoring programmes have led to increased awareness and understanding of sustainable practices and mitigating measures in aquaculture to safeguard marine environment.
In turn, the adoption of improved management practices in local aquaculture activities that reduce adverse environmental impacts on the marine environment is being reflected in improved results obtained from the environmental monitoring.
Similar seminars were held for the first time last year.
This year's seminars were attended by divers and other staff from AJD Tuna Ltd, Malta Fishfarming Ltd, and Pisciculture Marine de Malte Ltd.
