Professor Arnold Cassola, the Maltese Green MP in the Italian Parliament, has asked Italian Interior Minister Giuliano Amato in a Parliamentary question why, as stated by EU Commissioner Franco Frattini, Italy is not participating in the operation Nautilus II, with Malta, France, Germany and Greece.

Professor Cassola noted that there are numerous incidents and humanitarian tragedies in the seas bordering Italy, Malta and Libya.

"In this context," he said, "does not Minister Amato agree that it is useful for Italy to participate in Nautilus II in view of the continuous tragedies in the Mediterranean and also considering that Operation Nautilus II will provide a deterrent to illegal migration?"
