Borg's streak halted in Carlow

Defending champion Alex Borg suffered a shock defeat on Thursday night during Day Two of the European Snooker Championship which is currently being played in Carlow, Ireland.

Borg was stunned by Jonny Fulcher, of Switzerland, who had breaks of 63, 64 and 69 on his way to a 4-0 win.

Defeat ended Borg's record of 25 straight wins in the championship, having won all 12 matches two years ago in Poland and repeated the feat last year in Romania.

Borg won his first group match on Wednesday but Thursday's upset halted his winning streak. Yesterday, he beat Mika Karhu, of Finland, 4-1.

The other Maltese player in the championship is Simon Zammit. He won two matches in Group H but lost one to Kryztof Wrobel, of Poland, 4-1.

The key frame in this match was the fourth which Zammit lost on a re-spotted black to go 3-1 down. Zammit had earlier won his first two matches both with an identical score of 4-0.

The highest break so far in the championship is 136, compiled by Jordan Brown, of Northern Ireland. Each of the 64 players taking part has to play seven matches in the group before the knock-out phase.
