Appreciation - Saviour Cilia, MD
Adrian Vella, John Buhagiar and David Mamo, writes:
It is with a deep sense of loss and sorrow that we write about a dear friend, Saviour Cilia, or simply Salvu to his many friends and colleagues. Salvu's life was taken by a freak accident on June 2 that in many ways bears startling similarities to that which claimed the life of his brother a few years ago.
We first met in October 1988 when we entered the University and subsequently became firm friends. Salvu was the person one would go to if anything of a mechanical nature needed to be done. His accomplishments ranged from designing the logos on the Medical Students' Association's T-shirts to creating the props for a skit presented at a students' festival.
During our years in Medical School - it can now be revealed - Salvu became the editor of the now sadly defunct Apoplexy Now, raising its commentary to new levels of irreverence and wit.
Lest it be thought that Salvu was a one-dimensional character, his support for his friends knew no bounds as many of us can attest. He and his wife Nadia, also a product of the 1988 Medical School intake, were a strong source of support for many of us who left the island to practise abroad. It was always refreshing to catch up on the news with old friends in the happy company of their daughters. In recent years, despite burgeoning responsibilities, he became the MAM representative of health centre doctors and applied himself to this task with characteristic selflessness and determination.
It was in circumstances such as these that Salvu's optimism, sincere regard for his friends and patients as well as his faith shone through. Salvu was always an optimist. Since he is not with us today, it is his memory that will need to sustain us, and, above all, his beloved family in the aftermath of his loss.
