Discrimination is instinctively considered to be negative in its effects however the discrimination mentioned during the Dialogue with the Prime Minister at the Ministry for Gozo on May 16 was all but negative! Dr Gonzi mentioned how the government believes in positive discrimination as an incentive to help the Gozitan economy. Two cases in point were the reduction in licences of Gozitan tourist establishments to counteract the disadvantages posed to this sector by seasonality problems as well as the recently launched allocation of Lm1 million in incentives aimed at attracting investment and increasing job opportunities on the island. In fact the former decision was taken after it had been suggested in a similar discussion prior to last year's budget.

The Prime Minister welcomed suggestions made during this year's Djalogu session since these form the basis of decisions to be taken with regards to the government's policy for Gozo for the coming year. And the Gozitans participated concretely touching on all aspects of Gozitan society.

As a Gozitan I appreciate the special attention given by the government to Gozo. The setting up of the Ministry for Gozo way back was proof of the special attention given to Gozo by Nationalist governments, which attention has been steadfastly given along the years.

Yes, Gozo needs this positive discrimination. This special treatment will ensure that Gozitans will remain on the same level of their Maltese brothers within the European Community.
