Earlier this year Junior News and the 34U campaign set a competition for schools.

Here are two entries from two categories, which asked students aged six and seven to paint a picture showing how trees provide shelter and students of eight and nine to tell us how trees help mankind. The winners of this competition will be announced next week And we will be printing more entries in future issues.

One of the most beautiful things that God created is the tree. Trees are very useful to man because they provide lots of things.

There are lots of trees from which we can get fruit. The orange tree provides us with delicious fruit and we can make juice from the oranges. From the olive tree we get olive oil, which is best for our health. From other trees we get nuts, rubber and other useful materials.

The wood from trees like oak or walnut also provide us with wood to make furniture. Even paper for books and magazines comes from trees. Other trees provide us with firewood for heating and cooking, especially for people living in the forest itself.

But the most important role of trees is that they clean the air. They take in bad air and let out oxygen, which is what we breathe. This is why trees growing along a road should not be destroyed. They clean the air of fumes from the cars. Trees also provide shade from the sun, especially in summer.

They are also the homes of a lot of creatures. Birds build their nests in their branches and other small animals like squirrels live in holes in the trunk. A lot of others live at the base of trees, near the roots.

Trees make places look beautiful, so it is really nice when people are encouraged to plant trees all over Malta. However, we should take care of old trees because it took a long time for them to grow and they are part of our lives.
